“This is a colorized picture of my maternal grandmother, Eunice Elizabeth Mott, born in 1909 in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York, taken when Eunice was three-years-old. She was the oldest child of George Bradly Mott and Bessie Maria (pronounced Ma rye ah) Miller and descended from the early settlers of Long Island.

Eunice harkened back to those earlier ancestors in her manners and speech as she grew up on the family homestead in Round Swamp in East Hampton.

She married Charles Eric Squires of Southampton, New York; they had four children, three of whom reached adulthood. She raised her children, mostly as a single mother, on the family homestead in a small, two-bedroom, pink house, next door to her parents. I have no context around the photo except for the notation of Eunice’s name and age on the back.”
